Abstract: This project uses Black Feminist Thought (Collins, 2000) and Intersectionality Theory (Crenshaw, 1989) to construct the first intersectional gendered racial identity development scale for Black women. Existing racial identity scales only measure gender identity, and doesn’t accurately capture intersectional identity development. Knowledge from previous scales and models will be utilized to create an intersectional scale with clinical and research implications, increase culturally competent mental health care practices, reduce negative mental health outcomes and increase healthy identity development. It will enhance the rigor of future gendered racial identity research that is used to inform our understanding about Black women’s mental health.
